The hospital records of 478 persons with a
1995/96 Emergency Department (ER) presentation for self-inflicted
injury (SII) were tracked for three years.
When compared to those who presented with either asthma attacks or
other complaints, the SII group showed a much higher return rate (2.3 per person per year, versus 1.2
for the asthma group and 0.8 for the "other" group). The SII group had
higher return rates for SII itself, and for unintentional injuries,
assault, mental disorders, substance abuse and headache.
Individuals who harm themselves are chronic users of the ER with a
great variety of problems. These multiple influences need to be
considered when designing inerventions.
